How to clean your silicone dinnerware

Silicone does not smell before first use, but after some time you may notice an odour. This is actually the results of food oils and washing detergents clinging to each other on the surface of the product and not the silicone itself. This is because no chemicals are added to the silicone to make it rigid.

Silicone dinnerware are poreous in nature and therefor can absorb smells from food or soap, but there are several ways to remove them:

Baking

Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the silicone for 10–15 minutes. This method works best for 100% silicone products.

Boiling

Submerge the silicone in boiling water for 10–15 minutes. This method can also sanitize the silicone.

Baking soda

Baking soda absorbs grease and food oils that cause smells. You can mix baking soda with hot water to soak the silicone, or sprinkle it over the silicone and let it sit overnight. You can also make a paste of equal parts baking soda and vinegar or lemon juice, spread it over the silicone, let it sit for at least 30 minutes, and then rinse.

Lemon juice

Soak the silicone in hot lemon water, or rub a lemon over the silicone, let it sit for 20 minutes, and then soak in hot water.

Vinegar

Soak the silicone in a 50-50 mixture of white vinegar and water for about an hour.

To prevent smells from forming, make sure you clean your dinnerware right away and dry with a towel after each use. You can also use a detergent that doesn't contain additives or fragrances.
